Sony PS4 To Be First True 3D Console?

PS4 to have 3D capability

Senior Producer of F1 2011, Paul Jeal, said in a recent interview with T3 that the PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 could become the first true 3D enabled consoles.

“We’re working through the steps at the moment for F1 2012 and trying to work out where it lies,” Jeal said. “I’d be surprised if 3D went in; it’s at quite an early stage. When the next-generation of consoles come out, perhaps 3D will be ranked up top, until then we’ve still got a lot of game related feature ideas we want to get in for next year.”

More than 50 3D PS3 games on the way

It won’t be long before the PlayStation 3 is accommodating a slew of 3D titles, a Sony executive has reportedly told gaming publication Develop Online.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Studio Director Mick Hocking told Develop Online recently that Sony is currently “applying 3D to more than 20 internal games.” He went on to say that third-party studios are also seeing value in creating 3D titles for the PlayStation 3.

“Overall we have more than 50 titles currently being converted into 3D, and this number if growing fast,” Hocking reportedly told Develop in the interview. “Some of them are massive names. That’s a really, really good sign that the industry is behind our unique message that 3D is a key element in the future of home consoles.”

Unfortunately, Hocking didn’t elaborate on which titles are currently being converted to 3D. But one of the most anticipated 3D releases for the PlayStation 3 is Killzone 3, which is currently in development. According to Hocking, when players “plant an explosive charge on the wall” in the game, the 3D effect makes gamers think the “charge has been placed on your TV. It’s amazing.”

Sony has been investing heavily in 3D both in and out of the gaming space. Earlier this year, the company updated the PlayStation 3′s firmware to support 3D games. In September, it updated the PlayStation 3 again to accommodate 3D Blu-ray movie playback. The company is also heavily invested in the 3D TV market, selling sets with the technology built-in.

For now, 3D games are somewhat hard to come by. Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops is arguably the most notable 3D title on store shelves. But if what Hocking reportedly said is true, it might not be long before a slew of 3D titles make their way to Sony’s console.

In a presentation designed to outline the “five key advantages of PlayStation 3”, Sony stated: “All PS3 units will be firmware upgradeable to 3D.” The company also promised to “release 3D games”.

Sony has spoken about taking the PS3 3D before, even demoing a PS3 running 3D versions Gran Turismo Prologue and MotorStorm at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) back in January 2009. But this is thought to be the first time that the electronics giant has officially promised that the console will go 3D.

Rollout of “3D Gaming on PlayStation 3” will start next year, Sony’s presentation slides revealed.

Playstation 4 To Use 3D HDTV?

Published by:

The big fuss at CES this year is 3D HDTV technology. By wearing 3D glasses — yes, like these — while watching special 3D HDTVs, viewers experience a 3D pop-out effect. At Sony’s booth, it’s even running PlayStation 3 software, like MotorStorm and Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, in 3D. At this point, it’s all just for show. Sony has no official plans to release updated 3D versions of these games. But CES attendees have been rather impressed with the tech demos. IGN editor Chris Roper even wrote a short editorial on the topic, pondering whether or not Sony’s next console, PlayStation 4, could or should utilize the new 3D technology.

Releasing the PlayStation 4 with full-on 3D viewing capabilities would be a game-changing move, especially if the next Xbox and Nintendo systems don’t follow suit. As mentioned, it apparently sounds amazing, which is obviously a good thing for Sony fans. But it would also give the PS4 that same sort of nifty catch that has gotten so many people to buy a Wii. Wiggling joysticks around is nothing compared to seeing objects jump out of the screen.

At this point, I’d be willing to throw down $20 (I’m not a rich man) that the PlayStation 4 will be primarily a 3D viewing system. I’ll honestly be somewhat disappointed if it’s not. — Chris Roper, IGN
