Call of Duty: World at War Review 11 February 2009 at 11:01 am by admin

When I first heard that the new installment of COD was going back in time to finish the fight (sorry to steal you tag line Halo) I was pissed. I thought that COD:MW was a great break from all the WWII games that have been released over the last decade. I made it clear to all those that I game with that I will be absent from multiplayer lobbies. I thought taking the franchise back to WWII was a step backward.

Well, after playing a few online matches at a friend’s house I couldn’t help myself. I went and bought it the next day.

For those of us who like to look at pretty things WAW will not disappoint. Graphically WAW is quite an improvement over MW. It’s sharper, cleaner, and doesn’t look washed out. Not that MW was a slacker, it’s just that WAW looks better.

Now for the game play.

I have read a few reviews for this game and most say that the story mode was….meh. I would have to agree, but only when I was playing alone. The way it switches between marines and the red army was kind of annoying. And it doesn’t do anything that we haven’t seen and done before.

The developers have added some new game modes, one of which is the online competitive coop. This is where the story mode was a lot of fun for me. Trying to best your friends by getting the most points never gets old. If you enable some of the death cards (that are found in all the levels throughout the game) then you really have a game.

Another new addition to the multiplayer mayhem is NAZI ZOMBIES. Here’s how it plays; Nazi Zombies storm your stronghold, you kill Nazi Zombies, repair the windows they carelessly dismantled, rinse and repeat until your crew is dead. Its fun at first but gets real repetitive real fast. And it is full of glitches.

Now for the reason we play COD, the online multiplayer.

It’s basically the same as before. The lobby is almost identical as its predecessor. The controls are exactly the same which is nice. The perks are very similar with a few differences. The only real difference is the weapons, maps and the kill streak perks.

There is a LOT of glitches that allow players to fall through the maps and continue to rack up kills. Now these punks kill the fun. But the good players will have someone watching these spots and deal with the punks who try to take advantage of other players.

I never played COD3 but have read more then once that Treyarch (developers of COD3 and COD:WAW) are not really concerned with the glitches in their games so don’t hold your breath for a patch.

I feel this game is still as fun as the rest of the COD series but it’s not new. It’s basically COD:MW with a WWII skin.

This is COD’s farewell to WWII and I for one am excited to see what the franchise has in store for the future.
