PS4 codenamed “Orbis” – Full Details On PlayStation 4

Kotaku is reporting the PlayStation 4 is being codenamed “Orbis”. Development kits for Sony’s fourth generation device were sent out to “select developers” in January, with newer technology delivered after the 2012 Game Developers Conference.

The specs developers will be working with are AMD x64 CPU and AMD Southern Islands GPU (same as AMD’s high-end PC GPUs for 2012). The PS4 GPU will play games at a resolution of 4096×2160, which far exceeds the average HD television resolution with 1920X1080 pixels. In comparison the PlayStation 3 games output at 1280X720. The PlayStation 4 will also be capable of playing 3D games in 1080p, compared to PS3′s at 720p.

It is said the PS4 will not be backwards compatible with the current PlayStation 3 games. Orbis will have a built in feature that will prevent used games from being played. New PS4 games will be available on a Blu-Ray disc or PSN downloaded. If you have the disc, it must be locked to a single PSN account. Used copies will be limited to a trail mode, before they have to pay a fee to unlock/register the full game.

I been getting Sony Playstation Consoles ever since the 1st Playstation was released. I bought the fat ps2 & slim, and the fat ps3 & slim when they first came out, but the PS3 will be the last system I will buy from Sony if they decide to do this.

I haven’t ever bought a Xbox, but I will definitely switch over.

I wonder who was the retard who suggested such a feature. He should be fired. Lets say you have a friend who has a PS4 if you want to go over and play with your game at his house, you can’t because Sony won’t let you.

Bullshit, Sony does not have the right to tell me when or how to play MY games!

I’m thinking games will be tied to a psn account, not the hardware. How. Cool would it be to go to your friends house log on with their PS4, and have your saves, fight there. Clouds are the future!!

    This is ridiculous!
So you’re telling us that if you’ve collected PS1, 2 and 3 games throughout the ages, you won’t be able to play any of them on this console? And that if you want to play a friend’s game, or buy a second hand game (of which is a colossal market, and gives the games companies lots of coverage), you just can’t? And you can’t rent games, ultimately reducing the profit from places such as Blockbuster. I stopped buying Playstations after PS2, to be honest, because when the PS3 came out, I just knew exactly the route that Sony was heading down. More money in their pockets when the fanboys buy it, even when it’s at an inconvenience to the main mass of their fans.
Shame on you, Sony. You had a fantastic range with the first 2 consoles, and just blew it away. Shame on you, indeed.

Have always been a playstation fun but the idea of PS1 to PS3 consoles not configured to work on the new PS4 is not consumer frendly, since some of us are still tired up to old console games and does not necessary mean i must always play on my old console. We all believe in convinience and sony must respect that to ensure consumer retention. Even for me i do give my old consoles out to a friend in need of it when i buy a new version but retains my favourate disk expercialy fight night Midway games.

Not too late for sony to reverse it decision.

This is absolutely ridiculous. Every one has made valid points in their comments-locking a game to one profile? What about the people who share a console like me and my partner? To play it on my profile we would have to pay again? No thanks! And let’s not forget, not everyone can splash out £40 or more on a new game, so being able to buy pre-owned copies at half the price is the only way some of us get to play new games. I love my PS3, I really do, but it makes me angry how much more money Sony want us to pay after we saved for months to get the console and can rarely afford new games. We will be sticking to our PS3 and will give this new moneymaker a wide berth!

well i think that the game license per console is a good idea if they move to SD cards or some form of an SD card as it would be too easy to pirate. even though pirates will find a way around it regardless. I actually think that this move would not be to hit the used game market but more to prevent pirating. If Sony was smart they would make it so if you buy a ps4 you get a program that you can install on your PC that will allow your PC to play all of the old PS version discs. I realize that this has already been done my emulators and what not but the emulators are not consumer friendly where as Sony could commercialize it. As for bringing it to a friends house and playing the game on your friends console, If Sony was smart they should give you some form of game code to use on another console to temporarily unlock the game for use on that machine, thus leaving it paired to your console but still usable on another console. I think people should stop complaining about it and think of solutions for the company to help make everyone happy as its not an easy task.

Its a proven fact that most people complain over things to hear themselves. I fear this topic is all to much the same song and dance. News flash consumers when i giant meaga corp is losing money to second hand common knock off weiners who sell used games at 5 bucks cheaper than the new price …Thats a rip off
The fact That most of the games lose their value after a week on the shelf is bull…and my fav linking a game to one account sounds like a great idea since it will prevent people from stealing games and getting to play them. Whatever the case is and how ever it works out even without you few petty consumers whinning over sand in your partners vagina and the price of tea in China make sure you know this …If you dont like it dont buy it ! They will make it it will be awesome and you can go play nintendo with all the other lil kiddies who have flat busted pockets oh and ass hat who dosent know how to spell so well worst is not the word you needed ( maybe you should go back to school and stop playing games ) worse is the word you wanted .No wonder noone listens to you people

Sony better get ready for a flop. Kids spending $60 on a game they can’t play at a friends house is just inviting disaster. Does Sony value the customer or the game developers more? MW3 made a billion dollars in sales in a week! How much do they want? Gamer geeks will rebel against the corporate suits and win! Waiting for Apple’s game console now.

  10. Clemmy

I think sony is under pressure from game companies. They are the ones who loose a ton of money through the used game market. Plus if this is true people will find a way to mod the unit. Not that we should have to. Still.. Not impressed

Why don’t we get back to the basics Sony and Xbox and stop worrying about building a new system and get the graphics right in what we have today. Look at the old and new games like espen2k5, smash court tennis3 and MLB 2k11 where we have shadows and shade moving as you play the game. These days we have soccer and tennis games where the shade and all that stays in one place boring. So before building and new system let’s get this shit right

  12. Harry

That is fucking retarded! I have friends come round and they show me their new game, so what?! Half the time, i like it so much, I go out and buy it just so I can play with then too. Getting demos off the PSN store was crap as they showed pretty much nothing of the actual game and the core mechanics of certain features you were curious about. I despise the Xbox but the way you’re going now is utter crap! This is the kind of thing you intend to do then I have no choice but to side with the XBox. The one reasoning revered you, Sony, was because I believed you weren’t money hogging whores like you competition but looks like I was wrong. Have fun fucking yourselfs over your incompetence and ignorance to what your customers and demographic market desires!

ive defended sonys playstation as the best since the first sony playstation was released, now with this news about the fourth is disheartening. it seems the best thing for the ps four is going to be cooking eggs on it but it wont sell for a grill either so sony might as well scrape the four now and start thinking of five if they survive that long

  14. Emsins

this is stupid, it’s their worst idee ever, i don’t like xbox, ut at least they’re not doing something stupid as this, this is just bullshit, nly idiots and loners with lots of money will buy this crap

  15. ;p

Xbox 720 it’s going to use the same ID technology for they console… really a crap, but, it is not going to stop me from buying a PS4! Seriously they shouly think a little bit bore on the gamers and people wallet instead of thinking when is going to be released or anything else

Hey guys!one crucial question has appeared in my mind.the question is:
if its games are played in 4096*2160 resolution…how can my tv (which shows the resolution of, at most, 1080)show the pictures?
    sb answer plz.

  17. stokesyboi

right, for everyone getting overly angry about this it’s just a rumour on a website, don’t get all high and mighty about a rumour and secondly what’s wrong with a game being tied to a psn account, I already have made a user on friends’ ps3′s and linked that user to my account to play with my own game settings, etc and then if you don’t trust your mates just delete said user afterwards ( although I’m guessing with ps4 they’d allow users to be password protected of sorts to stop the arduous task of repeating yourself)

also I hear people say about how can my tv support such a high resolution…retards! – obviously like with ps3s now, the console can support up to that resolution and the ps4 ill obviously have options to select the resolution that your tv requires

all in all this sounds like a great idea except the issue with 2nd hand games purchasing, so lets hope this stays a rumour or they find a way around such an issue
