GameStop Responds To PS4 Blocking Used Games

Published by:

With rumors of Sony’s PS4 having the tecnology to prevent used games from being used without paying an additional fee, GameStop exec spoke on the impact it would have on the used games market.

“GameStop is excited to see what impending consoles, like the Wii U, will bring to the gaming community. While we can’t speculate, we do think it is highly unlikely that the next generation of video game consoles will implement technology that blocks used content because it would be considered a very unfriendly consumer initiative. As of now, the company has not received any information from the console manufacturers that any new consoles will not play pre-owned games.”

PS4 Sales Expected To Underperform

Published by:

Sony has dominated the gaming industry over the past 12 years since the PlayStation 2 was released in 2000 which to date has sold over 154 million consoles, and more than 62 million PlayStation 3s since 2006. However, Piper Jaffray analysts Michael Olson and Andrew Connor said they expect the PlayStation 4 to not be as successful.

Sony’s PlayStaton 4 (codenamed Orbis) is rumored to be released in 2013. The analyst predicts that the PS4 will underperform the first 14 months of its release date by 53 percent.

Mobile games and social games are expected to continue to have a huge impact on software sales.

“We believe console gaming will continue to be a time-share donor to social networks, mobile games, and tablets. We therefore favor companies with increasing exposure to social/mobile gaming, including Zynga and EA.”

More PS4 Rumors; PS Vita Compatibility & Using DirectX

Published by:

The latest from the PS4 rumor mill is that Sony’s next generation console will use DirectX instead of Sony API.

Crytek was scaling its tech for the PS4 under the assumption it would be using a 24-core Cell processor, however the studio was forced to start fresh when it was informed the PlayStation 4 won’t be using Cell at all.

According to a source Sony modified Vita’s launch hardware to ensure that it will be compatible with PS4. With the change Vita would be used to control PS4 games with both twin sticks and touch, similar to Nintendo’s Wii U and its controller.

More information concerning PS4 has come to light. According to a source from VG247, Sony intends on launching the PlayStation 4 before the Xbox 720 in 2013. The company is said to be determined this time around to get the jump on Microsoft.

One source revealed that the top publishers are already aware of the PS4 and that all next-generation consoles will be available by 2014.

“Top line publishers already know about it,” our source said. “Developers working with publishers – like Ubisoft, for example – already know what’s going on. They’re already working on it.”

More information concerning the PS4 will be released to developers under NDA in May.
