PlayStation 3 Greatest Hits Collection Adds 5 New Games

Published by:

In case you’ve been holding out on buying some of the most successful PlayStation 3 games up until this point, we have some good news for you. Sony has just added five new titles to their value-priced Greatest Hits collection to entice new and old gamers alike who might have missed out on these games the first time around. The price for each is $29.99, a bargain for some and a steal for a few others.

The first game added to the list is God of War III, the final chapter of one of the most impressive and violent franchises in the history of PlayStation exclusives. God of War III released early last year and received a positive review from Game Rant, solidifying the title as a must-play for all fans of the series.

Next is Heavy Rain, the narrative-driven action-adventure that caused a great deal of buzz last year. Opinions have ranged from the title being a poor mockery of a game to a glimpse at the future of game design, but the general consensus is that this unique experiment in storytelling was worth picking up if only to experience something virtually unheard of before 2010 (excluding Indigo Prophecy). It even scored a perfect 5/5 here!

The third title is ModNation Racers, the second of the Play, Create, Share games after LittleBigPlanet. This kart racer allows players to construct tracks on the go, and offers some fantastic gameplay for a title so focused on creation. This is yet another game that was widely praised here, and should be worth a look if you have yet to try it out.

UFC Undisputed 2010 is the fourth game added to the Greatest Hits. This mixed martial arts game was a dramatic improvement over the 2009 edition, and gave fighting game aficionados something to keep their eyes on in the coming years.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves needs no introduction for anyone who owns a PS3. This Naughty Dog action title provided some of the most satisfying platforming, shooting, and set piece manipulation we’ve seen so far in this console generation, at least in our humble opinion. And we aren’t the only ones who think so. This will be the fifth and final game added to the Greatest Hits this time around.

All of these games are worth considering if you have somehow avoided them this long. Are there any games on this list that you have not played yet? If so, why not go out and buy them right now?

All of these Greatest Hits and the 47 before them are available on store shelves now.

Modern Warfare 3 Getting GDC Reveal

Published by:

With the annual Game Developers Conference (GDC) fast approaching, reports have emerged suggesting the high-profile industry event will be used to unveil yet another sequel in the hit Call of Duty franchise.

Speculation began circulating when game third-party publisher Activision Blizzard launched a mysterious website sporting nothing more revealing than a countdown clock and a web address referencing Modern Warfare 2’s arch villain.

At time of posting, the countdown clock displayed at findmakarov.com stood at more than four days, which would see it running down to zero during next week’s GDC in San Francisco.

Given the recent billion-dollar popularity amassed by Call of Duty: Black Ops—not to mention Activision’s penchant for profit wringing—it wouldn’t come as much of a surprise to see Modern Warfare 3 at GDC.

The countdown site has arrived around a month after the L.A. Times reported that Activision has pushed development teams Raven and Sledgehammer up against the Call of Duty grindstone alongside Modern Warfare stalwart Infinity Ward.

PS3 Could See Price Cut This June

Published by:

It’s pretty widely expected that one or more of the three platform holders will slash hardware prices this year. At this point, it’s just a matter of figuring out which platforms will offer a price reduction first, at what time of the year and by how much. According to Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter, this June might bring the next PS3 price cut.

“We expect PS3 software sales to spike when several high profile releases launch in the coming months, and believe that overall PS3 software sales would benefit immensely from a hardware price cut, expected in June,” he said.

From June 7-9 the industry will be attending the annual E3 Expo, so Sony’s E3 press conference could be the perfect place to announce some price cut news and stimulate the market. At the moment, a 160GB PS3 goes for $299 (and bundles with Move are priced higher still). If Sony could afford to drop its base PS3 model to $199, it would do wonders for the console’s sales and really fuel PS3′s momentum when combined with a stellar games lineup for 2011.

Pachter has previously said that Microsoft may be the first to drop price, putting pressure on Sony to follow suit.

Is a new PS3 model on its way?

Published by:

Sony is currently embroiled in legal proceedings with a bloke known as George Hotz; you must have heard of him. Thanks to him (and a few other hackers), the PS3’s root key has been opened up, essentially allowing people to do whatever they want on the console. That, obviously, leaves Sony in the position of having a platform they have little control over.

A few days ago it was reported that hackers can (apparently) unban themselves from the PSN and get other, legitimate users banned instead. It’s all getting a little too much, so the next step would obviously be to abandon the PS3 as a platform and move onto the PS4. Sony has already said that they’re not doing that, but fresh rumours have cropped up that they will be releasing a new PS3 SKU in the coming months.

According to a source belonging to Everything HQ, Sony is well into the planning of a new PS3 model that will be hack proof. Of course, nothing is hack proof so what’s more likely is that the next model, if it in fact exists, will just have tighter security measures.

The source also mentions that Sony will be dropping the price of current PS3 units in an attempt to get rid of them; the new SKU will cost £186.99 and will come with a 300GB HDD. Design-wise, the new PS3 will look like the current PS3 Slim.

As far as a release date is concerned, there is nothing concrete, but Sony supposedly wants to get its legal shenanigans with Hotz out of the way before releasing the new unit. I can’t imagine why…

PS3 Timed Exclusive For Resident Evil 6?

Published by:

When Resident Evil 5 was unveiled at E3 several years ago, reports claimed that the game could have been a timed exclusive for the Xbox 360. According to Everything HQ, Resident Evil 6 could be a timed exclusive for the PS3.

We all know that Resident Evil 5 was released simultaneously for both the PS3 and Xbox 360. If it was a timed exclusive, Microsoft would have had to offer Capcom quite a bit of money for them to release it on the Xbox 36o first.

Sony is looking to to strike a similar deal but only for real this time. The fee offered by Sony to Capcom is reportedly being approved and will see Resident Evil 6 to be a PS3 exclusive to up to a year.

It’s only a rumor for now but it’s does sound feasible. Microsoft offered Activision quite a large sum so that Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops’ map packs were released on the Xbox 360 first before going to the PS3 a few short months later.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII Still PS3 Exclusive

Published by:

In the latest Japanese V-Jump magazine, Final Fantasy Versus XIII was listed as coming to both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

However, it appears that this was a misprint on their part. Square Enix and designer Tetsuya Nomura has said the game is a PS3 exclusive, and after what V-Jump said on Twitter, it appears to still be the case.

“We truly are sorry for this,” V-Jump writes. “It’s a misprint. We will apologize and run a correction.”

Risen 2 confirmed for PlayStation 3

Published by:

Fantasy role-playing game Risen 2 will launch for the PlayStation 3 as well as the PC and Xbox 360, Eurogamer can reveal.

The first game released for the PC and Xbox 360 only.

Unfortunately we still don’t know whether the Piranha Bytes-developed game will launch this year or next. “We don’t have a release window yet but I can confirm it’s Xbox 360 and PS3,” a spokesperson for publisher Deep Silver told Eurogamer.

In a press release issued this afternoon, Deep Silver said: “The eagerly-awaited successor of Risen will set sail worldwide for consoles and PC.”

Following this morning’s confirmation of Risen 2′s subtitle, we now have more story and setting details.

Risen 2 is set several years after the end of Risen. Titans have devastated the world and pushed humanity to the brink of existence. Creatures have emerged from the sea and stopped poor boats from doing their business.

You, the hero, must set out to stop the chaos. Your first stop as a member of the Inquisition is with pirates who frequent the southern islands. They’ll know what to do.

Player choices “serve to unlock new paths, features and additional skills for the character”, we’re told. “Together with a highly interactive environment and a full day/night-cycle affecting countless aspects of the game world, Risen 2 will be set in the most immersive RPG game world so far.”
